 in July 1941 the department of Statistics Was founded. 
 Where was it started first? 
 The Department started first at the Presidency College premises. 
 Who was the first Head of the Department? 
 Professor P.C. Mahalanobis was the first Honourary Head of the Department 
 When did the Department shift to the main campus of CU? 
 The Department shifted to Asutosh Building of the College Street Campus of the University in 1945.  
 When did the department shift to the present location? 
 It shifted to its present location in the Ballygunge Science Campus in 1964.

A Brief Profile of the Department.
 Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta, Position in the Country 
 It is still considered to be one of the best statistics department in the country in terms of of its research output, syllabus, teaching and stident quality. Its syllabus is a model to the other universities and it is the first department in the country to design two new courses a few years back viz. ‘statistics for development’ and ‘evolution of statistical concepts’ and later these were in the M.Sc. syllabus.
The students of the department have been consistently doing well in the Indian Statistical Service Examination conducted by UPSC and in the NET, GATE examinations.
